Bellator players headed to college
It's no secret as to why so many players from NFC Bellator are going to be playing soccer in college this fall.
“We went to a lot of the right tournaments,'' former coach Kevin Doyle said. “We went out of our way to make sure they went to events where they were going to be recognized by college coaches. And they're all good players. When you put good players in the right situations, good things happen.”
Doyle, a former Creighton assistant, coached many of the boys for three years before moving on to an assistant's job at Virginia Tech. Matt Briggs took over the team last year.
Former Millard West midfielder Cody Thayer will be joining Doyle at Virginia Tech. Others who earned scholarships include defender-forward Luke Theimer of Millard South (John Brown University), defender Joe Branstetter of Omaha Creighton Prep (Creighton) and forward Andrew Kallman of Millard West (Drake).
Those four started together in the Millard Stars organization when they were about 8 or 9.
Goaltender Taylor Reeves of Creighton Prep is headed to Indiana, defender Jake Essi of Omaha Westside to Hastings College and midfielder Manny Pena of Bellevue West to Bellevue University.
Forward Tyrel Spittler, who finished up at Shattuck-St. Mary's in Minnesota, will go to Western Illinois. Brandon Frink of Gretna, who played for Bellator last season, is heading to Morningside.
“To have four local players play Division I from the same club team is quite an accomplishment for a boys team,'' said Matt Howe, former director of coaching for the Nebraska State Soccer Association. “It's a little more unique because there are not as many programs.''
Reeves was one of 12 people chosen for the ESPN RISE All-America first team for the spring. He also was the Nebraska Gatorade player of the year. NFC In-house League Registration is now available for children age 3-9. League will begin September 11th. Register early to avoid being shut out as there are a limited amount of spots available.
